"One of the main topics of our conversation was Tatunashvili's tragedy. We emphasized that, unfortunately, this is the hardest form of manifestation of the difficult situation which has been created since 2008, the major challenge for national and regional security"- this statement the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Ketevan Tsikhelashvili made during the meeting with the European council democracy rapporteurs group members.
According to the State Minister, the facts of violation of human rights in the occupied territories are related to illegal detentions, restriction of freedom of movement, restrictions of different rights, including the violations of the rights of ethnic Georgian population.
During the meeting the participants discussed the situation in the occupied territories of Georgia, the challenges and difficulties that exist in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region as well as in the villages along the dividing lines in terms of security and humanitarian viewpoints.
"We talked about the necessity to continue and strengthen international efforts to ensure more protection for people. As you know, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe periodically prepares reports on the situation in Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia. Although they have limited access, this issue is on the agenda and is one of the important sources of information for the international community.
"We have the support of the Council of Europe also in confidence-building projects, which is especially important now, as well as in the future. We should prevent human rights further violations, take care of these people, support them in contacts around the dividing lines, help them in confidence building process. We already have but we need continuous international support", - said Ketevan Tsikhelashvili.
Russia destructive policy in Georgia and generally in the region also was discussed. It was noted that for sustainable peace and stability it is necessary to take steps towards peaceful resolution of conflicts.
