"It was a specific, containing clear messages decision in which the Council of Europe showed a very strong support to Georgia," - this is how the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Ketevan Tsikhelashvili commented on the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers’ Decision on the conflict in Georgia.
During the Committee meeting the Deputies once again recalled their decisions on “The Council of Europe and the conflict in Georgia”, reiterated the unequivocal support of the Council of Europe member States for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. They stated that, the Russian Federation continues to impede the peaceful conflict resolution process and undermines the security and stability in the region through its continuing military presence in the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
"All the current violations are highlighted in the document and the position that it is absolutely unacceptable for the Council of Europe. Discussion is on occupation, military exercises, violations of human rights, discrimination on ethnic grounds of people living in Gali and Akhalgori, violation of property rights and the right to return refugees. As well as on Russia's commitment and non-fulfillment obligations. It also discusses the peace initiative "A Step to a Better Future" and how important its sub-programs are for people, their welfare and future confidence building and dialogue.
"I would like to thank the Council of Europe for this decision, because it is not only clear and solid support, but it's a guarantee that we will be successful in peace policy through joint efforts. The combination and continuity of these positions by the partners ensures that Russian force will be unsuccessful and it has no prospect", - said Ketevan Tsikhelashvili.
