“There is No Cause to Expect Abkhazian Railway to Become Operational” – Mr. Paata Zakareishvili

7 August 2015

According to the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Mr. Paata Zakareishvili, there is no basis for expecting the Abkhazian railway to become operational.

Mr. Zakareishvili thinks that in this context, cleaning efforts on the railway carried out by Russian military personnel is very strange."A situation such as this might be cause for concern if there were some expectation of a train functioning in the nearest future; but this doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment. The aim of emphasizing this issue is similar to that of the border signpost installations - raising public awareness and facilitating appropriate reactions to such facts. Russia has little left to do but dabble in non-existing projects. I hope it will be clear to all that such projects are not real,"- Zakareishvili said.

Russian military servicemen have started cleaning Abkhazia’s railway connecting the region to the rest of Georgia.According to the so-called Abkhazian Railway department’s Deputy Director Igor Marghania, the soldiers are cleaning the rails from Ochamchire to Enguri.Apparently, the railway is in poor condition; Marghania supposes the work is being done in order to restore the line.
