Thematic Group of the State Interagency Commission held its working session in “Rooms Tbilisi” Hotel on the topic “Conditions of Roma People in Georgia.”
The First Deputy State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Mrs. Ketevan Tsikhelashvili opened the meeting.
According to the First Deputy State Minister, a special working group, established in frames of the State Interagency Commission, will address the problems of small and vulnerable ethnic groups in Georgia.
“The issue of Roma people is prioritized not only in Georgia, but elsewhere in Europe. In that regard we face many challenges – ranging from Roma registration to endless prejudices that may possibly exist within the society. According to our database, only one third of the Roma people are registered in Georgia, whereas others are practically left beyond the legal framework. Besides, challenges are related to education availability and socio-economic opportunities for Roma people,” – Mrs. Ketevan Tsikhelashvili declared.
According to the First Deputy State Minister, unofficial estimates tell that approximately 2000 Roma reside in Georgia.
The working session of the State Interagency Commission Thematic Group took place under the arrangement of the State Minister’s Office and with the support of the UN Association in Georgia (UNAG).
