"Today, Georgians and Abkhazians mark the anniversary of tragic events. This war was a huge mistake which should not have happened. The newly established state and the then leadership of the country failed to avoid the bloodiest conflict in the modern history of Georgia. During the war both sides suffered great losses and unimaginable human tragedies. Besides, the war caused the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
The result of the conflict was very hard for post-soviet Georgia. The country received big sacrifices, material and psychological damage, that has left a lasting scar on Georgian and Abkhazian society. We would like to expresses condolences to the families of all those who died in the conflict, both Georgians and Abkhazians.
On October 1 the Georgian population rejected the aggressive and militaristic policies imposed on them. Georgia is no longer the state it was 21 years ago. Today Georgia has the government that is ready to protect the interests of Abkhazians and Ossetians and is sincerely interested in laying the foundation for peaceful coexistence. On March 7, 2013 the Parliament adopted a resolution which legally reinforced Georgia’s unilateral pledge to the non-use of force that further strengthens our Government’s commitment to the peaceful, constructive and pragmatic resolution of conflicts.
We, Georgians and Abkhazians, should jointly find the solution and build the future on the basis of the European values that has no alternative. We are sure that with joint efforts the tragic developments of the last century will never happen again."
