The lecture was held at the National Defense Academy of Georgia, in Gori. The main theme was the government’s policy on conflict resolution.
Ms. Ketevan Tsikhelashvili familiarized the participants with the current situation in the occupied territories and the surrounding villages. She also spoke about the basic principles of state policy. Ms. Tsikhelashvili underlined the importance of international support during this period when Georgia has taken several important steps toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
"Our policy with respect to conflict resolution is based on several basic principles, among which the most important one is peace. The government policy is based on peaceful and non-violent vision. More broadly, our policy is peaceful, pragmatic and rational and focused on confidence-building and reconciliation. Also, direct communication with the Abkhazian and Ossetian societies is one of the most important principles, despite the fact that these territories are occupied by Russia", - Ms. Ketevan Tsikhelashvili said.
She also answered the course participants’ questions. They were interested in the process of installation of barbed wire fences and the ensuing humanitarian situation as a result of this process. The discussion also touched upon the importance of international mechanisms in conflict resolution and negotiation process, that together with the non-recognition and de-occupation policy will be focused on the promotion of people-to-people contact, human rights, the improvement of the humanitarian situation and thereby support for the Georgian policy.
