The 48th round of Geneva International Discussions was held

The 48th round of the Geneva International Discussions was held on 2-3rd of July. The main issue was the closure of the so-called checkpoint on the Enguri Bridge. The Georgian delegation highlighted the grave consequences that followed this action and underlined the necessity of settlement of the situation.

Special attention was paid to the cases of Archil Tatunashvili, Giga Otkhozoria and Davit Basharuli. Georgia's representatives once again talked about the necessity to enforce justice on these cases. The Georgian participants also focused on the death of Irakli Kvaratskhelia in the illegal military base of Russian Federation and demanded immediate exchange of the case materials from the Russian Federation.

The Humanitarian Issues group discussed the security and humanitarian problems of the conflict affected population in the occupied territories and along the dividing lines. Challenges that they have to deal with in their daily routine.

The Georgian side has raised the problem of violation of human rights in the occupied territories. Participants expressed concern about the facts of illegal detention and kidnapping. They also discussed such issues, as the restriction of free movement, the prohibition of getting education in their native language, property and other fundamental rights violations.

The subject of special consideration was the severe consequences of ethnic discrimination of the Georgian population of Gali and Akhalgori and the necessity of immediate solving of this challenge.

The necessity to restore Gali Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) without any preconditions was noted.

Members of the Russian Federation delegation and participants from Sokhumi and Tskhinvali left the humanitarian group as soon as they started discussing the issue of safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons.

The next round of the Geneva International Discussions will be held on October 8-9, 2019.
