The closure of the so called crossing point in Akhalgori direction and the problems it caused were the main topic of conversation at a meeting held by the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Ketevan Tsikhelashvili with the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Toivo Claar.

According to the State Minister, a lot of issues were raised at the meeting, which were important for Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region both in terms of security and humanitarian.

“The most pressing issue, of course, is the closure of the so-called crossing point in Akhalgori direction. Locking the “checkpoint” has become a very difficult daily challenge for Akhalgori residents and not only for them, as their movement is linked to vital needs. Many people expect traffic to open immediately.

“Also, of course, we talked about the restrictions on Enguri. This restriction of movement affects thousands of people living on or near the occupation line, regardless of ethnicity.

“We talked about the whole cascade of provocations that took place especially in Gugutiantkari and near Chorchana in recent period and about the detention of our fellow citizens. It is in the common interest to prevent the escalation and to improve both the humanitarian and the security situation”, - said Ketevan Tsikhelashvili.

According to her, the partners have a very clear position in this regard.

"Of course, we hope that with common reactions we will be able first of all to resolve the issues that are urgent for the population. The movement on Akhalgori direction should be opened, the restrictions on Enguri should be lift in order to talk about the high degree of freedom of movement that is important to everyone. Also, of course, there should be no escalation near Chorchana and illegal actions from the occupation regime should be stopped”, - said Ketevan Tsikhelashvili.
