LIA GIGAURI ATTENDED THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE EVENT

15 November 2019

Deputy State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Lia Gigauri attended the opening ceremony of Equality Week. The event is organized by the Council of Europe and its partner agencies, which will last from November 15 to 22.

The week is being held as part of an awareness campaign called "I Choose for Equality" and responds to the International Day for Tolerance.

“Our state has chosen equality. In Georgia equality is constitutionally guaranteed. We belong to a number of rare states that have a state strategy and action plan for civil equality and integration, due to the multi-ethnic population in our country.

The State guarantees their equality and equal rights in every way, be it public life, involvement in decision-making, protection of their cultural identity. Most importantly, help them to improve their state language skills while maintaining their mother tongue. It is also a challenge to strengthen women's representation of women of ethnic minorities and to engage them in social or political economic life.

Today we announced the launch of another new campaign to engage these women in entrepreneurship so that they can defend their rights and take care of their future”, - said Lia Gigauri.

Equality Week aims to increase tolerance in Georgia by raising awareness of the importance of diversity and equality.
