The First Deputy State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Mr. Petre Kankava took part into the extraordinary session of the OSCE Human Rights Committee on the issue of IDPs and refugees.
The First Deputy State Minister gave an overview of the situation in occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region, noting that dignified return of IDPs and refugees to their areas of residence should be rapidly resolved and the protection of the IDP rights and safety should be ensured.
According to Mr. Petre Kankava, the Georgian Government and international community views the fulfillment of the right of return explicitly as a humanitarian matter and calls on its resolution before Georgia’s jurisdiction is restored on its occupied territories.
The First Deputy State Minister also highlighted the number of socio-economic projects the Georgian Government extends to the residents of occupied territories.
By the conclusion of his speech, Mr. Kankava expressed his thanks to the representatives of the member states of the OSCE who supported the resolution on the “Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia,” adopted by the UN General Assembly on 7 July, 2016.
