The State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality Mrs. Ketevan Tsikhelashvili met with the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Nicholas Berliner.
During the meeting participants discussed the peaceful policy of the Georgian government, the situation in the occupied territories, the Geneva talks, the so-called parliamentary elections in Abkhazia and the upcoming "presidential elections and referendum" in South Ossetia.
"One of the main prerequisites for the conflicts peaceful resolution is confidence building and contacts between people. From this point of view, it is extremely important to deepen contacts between people and the work of the group on cultural exchange, which is stipulated in the Charter on Strategic Partnership between Georgia and the United States”, - said the State Minister.
Participants expressed their desire and readiness for further cooperation.
On March, 16, The United States published the statement, in which fully supports the territorial integrity of Georgia and its sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders. As such, the United States does not recognize the results of an election conducted illegitimately in Georgian territory without the consent of the Government of Georgia, and condemns the decision to integrate the military forces of the breakaway region of South Ossetia with those of the Russian Federation.
The United States’ position on Abkhazia and South Ossetia is clear and consistent – both these regions are integral parts of Georgia.
